5v5 Coed Indoor Soccer Rules (Turf)

All players must have signed the Five Star waiver prior to the start of the first game. Any player that has not signed the waiver prior to the start of the first game will not be eligible to play.
  • Rosters must consist of 8 players at a minimum

  • Five Star will provide a referee for each game

  • 5 participants on the soccer field (4 field players and 1 goalie), including 4 men (maximum) and 1 woman (there is no maximum number of women)

  • 4 players, including 1 woman are required to start a game (teams can start a game with 3 men and 1 woman at a minimum)

  • If a team is short a player come game time, teams will be given a 5 minute grace period after scheduled start time. If not enough players are present after the grace period, the game will be a forfeit. (For example, if game time is 7:30 pm, and a team is short 1 player at 7:30, that team will be given until 7:35 pm for another player to arrive)

  • Games will consist of two 20 minute halves. The clock will only stop for injuries deemed serious by the referee

  • There are no off-sides

  • Any soccer ball that goes out of play on the side lines will result in a kick in. There will be no throw ins

  • Any ball that hits the ceiling will result in an indirect free kick for the opposing team

  • Goalies may not punt or drop-kick the ball. Any infraction will result in an indirect free kick for the opposing team from the edge of the penalty box.

  • Goalies may not kick or throw the ball in the air over the half-field line. The ball must be rolled, must bounce, or be touched by another player from either team before crossing the half-field line. Any infraction will result in an indirect free kick from half-field for the opposing team.

  • Goal kicks may not travel in the air over the half-field line. The ball must bounce or be touched by another player before crossing the line. Any infraction will result in an indirect free kick from half-field for the opposing team.

  • The referee does not need to be notified for substitutions. Subs can be made during the flow of the game

League Format

  • League will consist of 10 teams

  • Each team will play 6 regular season games

  • Top 8 teams will qualify for the playoffs, where they can play up to an additional 3 games

  • The winning team will receive an engraved championship trophy, bragging rights, and each player will receive a 50% off coupon code for their next league!

Fouls, Misconduct, Free Kicks, Penalties, and Yellow/Red Cards

  • Any unsportsmanlike behavior may result in that player or team being suspended or removed from participating in all future Five Star leagues

  • Any team or individual players involved in a fight will be suspended from all Five Star activities. Any teams that engage in fighting will forfeit the remainder of their scheduled games

  • There is absolutely no slide tackling. Goalies are allowed to slide feet first in the box, but any contact with an opposing player will result in a penalty

  • All free kicks are indirect kicks (minimum 2 touches) with the exception of penalty kicks

  • When defending free kicks, opposing players must stand 5 yards away from the ball or 1/2 the distance to the goal if a foul occurs in close proximity to the goal

  • Players must always wait for the referees whistle to signal the start of play after a foul occurs. No "quick restarts" will be allowed

  • Any swearing, inappropriate gestures, or contact made with the referee will result in an immediate red card

  • If a player receives a yellow card, their team will have to play down a player for 3 minutes, or until the opposing team scores a goal (similar to a power play in hockey)

  • If a player receives a red card, their team will have to play 1 player down for the remainder of the game

Uniforms / Player Equipment

  • Five Star will provide team shirts. Team shirts must be worn by all players

  • Metal spikes are not allowed. We strongly recommend indoor cleats, turf cleats, or outdoor cleats with rubber spikes

  • Shin guards are not required, but are strongly recommended

Scoring / Standings

  • Winning teams will receive 3 points

  • Losing teams will receive 0 points

  • Teams that tie will each receive 1 point

  • Teams that are forced to forfeit will receive a 3-0 loss

  • Regular season games may end in a tie. Playoff games will be decided in sudden death/penalty kicks

Playoff Overtime Rules

  • Teams in playoff games that end regulation with a tie score will play one 5 minute golden goal overtime (the first team to score will win). If the game is still tied following the golden goal overtime, teams will then go to a penalty shootout

  • Penalty shootout format: Each time will select 5 players (maximum 4 men, minimum 1 woman). A coin flip will decide which team shoots first. Teams will shoot towards the same goal. If teams are still tied following the first 5 shooters, teams will continue alternating in a sudden death format (For example, if Team 1 shoots first and misses and Team 2 shoots and scores, Team 2 will be the winners). When entering sudden death rounds of a shootout, teams must have all of their players shoot before anybody can shoot for a second time. Once one team has gone through everyone on their roster, the other team may begin to "recycle" players to shoot again as well.

Game Cancellations

  • Indoor games may be cancelled due to facility constraints or unforeseen reasons. Five Star Sports Leagues will not cancel games unless it is absolutely necessary. Teams should assume that all games will be played as scheduled unless they receive notification stating otherwise from Five Star.

Picking Up Players

  • Let's face it, not every player can make it to every game (we get it, life happens). Five Star allows teams to pick up players when their team is short on players. Exciting, yes. However, there are rules and limitations.

  • Any player being picked up for a game must sign a waiver before participating. If no waiver is signed, the player will not be permitted to play.

  • Teams can only pick up players when their team does not have enough players to field a full team. A team may never pick up a player if they have enough players to field a full team.

  • There is a 1 goal penalty per picked up player

  • Come playoff time, no players are allowed to be picked up. Only players on your team's roster are permitted to play.

Sportsmanship / Personal Conduct Policy

  • Five Star Sports Leagues' main goal is for you to have fun while maintaining a safe and fun environment for everyone. We understand that you are competitive (we are too). Win, lose, or draw, we urge all players to play with integrity, respect the referee (even when you think they are wrong), respect opposing players, maintain self control, and be a good sport! "Win without boasting, lose without excuses."
